Diaries, 1852-1853, of an Illinois man's journey across the Great Plains in a wagon train, his gold prospecting on Rabbit Creek, California, and his school teaching and hog driving in Oregon; including descriptions of terrain and scenery, Pawnees and other Indians encountered, Mormons and their settlements in Utah, and comments on food, water, livestock, prices, and diseases. Also includes diaries, 1862-1864, of Kitchell's Civil War service as a Lt. Col. in the 98th Illinois Infantry, mainly in Tennessee, and obituaries for Mrs. John W. Kitchell and Mrs. William R. Kitchell.
